About Mosaics

About Pique Assiette

The art of mosaics has existed for centuries and is presently experiencing a rebirth in the area of home decor and interior/exterior design.

The type of mosaic you will explore in our workshops is a style called pique-assiette. This term which loosely translates as crazy plate-stealer was originally applied to a Frenchman named Raymond Isidore. He collected shards of pottery and glass from the neighbouring countryside and proceeded to cover his house with mosaic inside and out. Even his wife's sewing machine was not safe!

Materials used in Pique Assiette

The term pique assiette has come to categorize the type of mosaic which incorporates materials from different sources. These items can include: china, ceramic tile, stained glass, marbles and found objects such as buttons, costume jewelry, beads, figurines, shells, game pieces, magnets and the like.
